Overview

We recommend that new members joining SeniorNet Nelson who have a Windows 8.1 computer complete this course – unless you already have advanced computer experience. These courses do NOT appear on the course Timetable as entry to these courses is arranged if required, at the Meet & Greet sessions for new members.  

Classes will also be either for Non-Touch or Touch devices.

The course manuals are designed with easy-to-follow instructions.

Prerequisites

If your device is running Windows 8, you will need to get the free update to Windows 8.1 installed before the course.   Find someone to help or come to a Help Session if necessary.

Learning Objectives

The Introduction to Computers course aims to help you acquire or refresh the basic skills you need in computing. These are steps in a process which will help you get the most from your computer. For the more experienced user, it fills in knowledge gaps and refreshes your skills.


You will learn:

  • How to Start and Shut Down the computer correctly
  • Some basic Word Processing concepts such as Highlighting, Cut, Copy and Paste
  • How to create a Desktop shortcut
  • How to create a Folder
  • These are all essential skills needed to move on with confidence to other courses.
  • To understand some of the ‘computer speak’ that may have been puzzling you. 
  • The difference between left and right clicking
      •  About the Desktop, the Taskbar and the Start Menu
      •  About Fonts
      •  About how to open and close a program
      •  How to create and save a document.

On completion of this course you will have gained more confidence in using your computer, and will have acquired many basic skills that you will need to move on to more advanced courses.
