Club Open Source Recommended List

The list is of open source software suitable for the Apple Mac versions from 10.6 onwards. Some are labelled with the particular versions of Mac and OS X (Ten) they will run on.  In each case, the applications are ready to install, and do not require unpacking.

Once installed, run the application from the Finder/Applications folder where it will be waiting for you and listed by name. Double click on it and you are in business. Installations will be covered in more detail in courses

Find them using Google and download them.

Libre Office (Office Suite)

Bean (Word Processor)

GIMP (Image Editing)

Scribus (Desktop publishing)

Thunderbird (Email client)

Firefox A  (Web Browser)

audacity (sound recorder and editor)

More is listed at http://www.opensourcemac.org/

Knowing what version of the Mac you have is necessary if you are to instal software because in some cases, the software is suitable for only a narrow range of Macs.

Courses

The  Introductory Course (run on both members' own computers and Learning Centre computers).  We have several tutors  and we are on the look out from amongst our graduates for more.

Digital Imagery Group

Kea encounter on Mt Arthur

Kea encounter on Mt. Arthur by David Blunt

The Digital Imagery Group is an enthusiastic bunch of people who like playing about with digital photographs and sharing them around. We have some amazingly talented photographers in the group, and we have others with little experience who just want to be able to share their photographs with far-off family. Many people are somewhere in between and we all learn from each other with great enjoyment. The aim of the group is for everyone to enjoy taking more and better photographs. We help to make using a camera fun and we show you interesting things. Drop in to any meeting.

DIG members on 28th November, 2014 - our last meeting for the year.

The group meets on the last Friday of each month at the SeniorNet hall at 2.00pm, or at a pre-arranged location. All SeniorNet members and potential members are welcome.  We ask for a $2 contribution toward overheads. No enrolment is required - just drop in if you are a financial member of SeniorNet Nelson.

The next meeting is on Friday 30th January 2015 at 2pm at the SeniorNet Hall.

Help and Practice Sessions

A service for current financial members of SeniorNet Nelson.
Help and Practice is from 2.30 to 4.30 on the first and third Friday of the month.

You have a free half hour - drop in any time between 2.30 and 4pm
$2 contribution toward overheads please.

The next Help Session is on Thursday 5th February 2015 because Friday 6th is Waitangi Day.

Help is available for queries and problems concerning Apple Macs and PCs with Microsoft Operating Systems: Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 and 8. We also attempt to help with Android tablets iPads and other devices. Everyone is most welcome. Entry is via the hall - please sign in and wear your badge.

Arrive any time between 2.30pm and 4.00pm and bring your queries to our helpers. We are obliged to limit each member's time to half an hour.  No question is too basic to ask - we have all been there! Experienced members will be on hand to help you.

It is also an opportunity to practise your computer skills on the Learning Centre's computers with help nearby. Bring along your manual and hone your skills.

All our computers are connected to the internet. Wireless internet connection is available for laptops and other wireless devices. Charge your device before coming or bring a power cord if your battery is unreliable! We look forward to helping you with computing difficulties. We don't have all the answers but usually we can point you in the right direction.

Here's a message to all members from Convener Doreen Burr:  "Regular Help Sessions (on the first and third Friday afternoons of each month) continue to be popular. Thanks are due to all our faithful helpers. Two helpers each for Windows and Mac computers are rostered on for each session, but we are always grateful for others who generously give their time more frequently. Some members arrive with fairly simple problems so we welcome helpers of all abilities. The more able helpers are sometimes challenged as they gather round a curly problem – but, between them, they usually solve it! If you have any ability you are welcome to join our happy band of helpers and also learn with us! Come along and see for yourself........."

Help & Practice Roster

To be advised...

If the date is not suitable you should be able to swap to another date with someone on the Roster - and tell a convener please.

We ask those rostered on to be at the rooms at 2.00pm to assist setting up chairs, tables etc, before 2.30pm when people start arriving.  As you help a member, please write a brief comment in the record book & try to limit your time with one person to 30mins, especially if there are others waiting for help.

Before leaving, help replace chairs & tables as found, turn off lights & heaters, put away tea things & tidy kitchen etc. If you are unable to attend a session, please swap with someone else on the Roster and let a Convener know who your substitute is.

We rely on exra helpers, and are extremely grateful to those who continue to turn up to most sessions. Anyone who can come, even for part of the time, is most welcome.
