How does it work?

A tutor, or Hangout “buddy”, meets up to six registered participants on an advertised topic at the scheduled date and time, and all parties can see and hear each other. The presenter explains the topic by sharing his or her screen, often displaying a Powerpoint presentation. It is explained live, with participants able to interject and ask questions.

What topics are covered?

Hangouts covers a myriad of technology-related subjects. There have been tutorials about online banking, interacting with various government agencies, social media, web browsers, auction sites and the use of various hardware and software, including smartphones and Chromecast.

SeniorHangouts Updates:

2 December 2020 - The first-ever Senior Hangouts event! This was held at Miramar in Wellington and linked across the country using YouTube Live, Facebook, Google Meet and Zoom. There were participants from Whangarei in the north to Invercargill in the South, from Palmerston North in the west to Tauranga in the east. About 30 delegates joined from around the country with SeniorNet’s National organiser, Heather Newall, coordinating the meeting supported by technical guru Vinay Karanam. With them in Wellington were representatives of two of our major sponsors Google and Westpac. The event lasted 90 minutes with online tutorials from Teresa Urutea in Kapiti and Bruce Smart from Invercargill. In addition. There were video messages from online tutors, or “buddies” as they’re called on SN Hangouts, from all over the country.
